BLUE NOTE FESTIVAL 2003 PUTS GHENT ON THE EUROPEAN JAZZ MAP

The second édition of the international Blue Note Festival was held at the Bijloke site in Ghent from 18 through 27 July 2003, concurrently with the Ghent Festivities. The Blue Note Festival presented a unique concept with a jazz program unprecedented in Belgium. The Festival's director, Bertrand Flamang, succeeded in making Ghent a household name amongst European jazz lovers.

The eight concert days were able to welcome a crowd of 18.000, opposed to the last year's 11.000. The architecturally impressive complex in and around the Bijloke site revealed itself again as the ideal backdrop and, at the same time, as a haven of peace and quiet just outside of the hectic commotion of the Ghent Festivities.

Patricia Barber opened this year's Festival. Mainstream and avant-garde jazz was programmed from July 19 through 21 under the label All That Jazz. Hip fusion that was sure to get everyone on the dance floor, was scheduled from July 24 through 26 under the label All That Jazz. Each night opened with an internationally renowned name, followed by a Belgian band. Closing act was an exclusive headliner that rarely performs in Belgium. A few of the names: Herbie Hancock, John Zorn, Patricia Barber, Dianne Reeves, Candy Dulfer, Marcus Miller, The Cinematic Orchestra, Dj Smash,... In between and after each performance of All That Jazz., Jules Deelder played jazz records from his vast collection. All That Jazz. not only listed three top performances each day, but also presented a DJ playing before an in between performances and another one to close the evening with a two-hour after party. Monday 27 July closed with the Blue Note Festival Party under the motto Groovy Funky Jazzy... This party welcomed the best Belgian and international DJ?s from a variety of different genres.

The Blue Note Festival is organized by VZW Jazz en Muziek in Gent in collaboration with the City of Ghent and Blue Note (EMI), the trendsetting jazz label since the 1940's. To celebrate the Festival, Blue Note-EMI released the cd All That Jazz ! - Blue Note Festival Edition 2003 in July. A unique introduction to the Festival, with contributions by artists connected with Blue Note and performing during the Ghent Festival
